2023 Global Peace Index: Iceland Tops the List as the Most Peaceful Country
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) recently released the 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 163 independent states and territories based on their level of peacefulness. This comprehensive report presents a data-driven analysis of global peace trends, economic value, and strategies for building peaceful societies. The GPI covers 99.7% of the world’s population and employs 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from reputable sources to assess peace across three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing conflicts, and militarization.
Global Peace Deterioration:
According to the latest GPI, global peacefulness declined by 0.42% on average, marking the thirteenth deterioration in the past fifteen years. In 2022, 84 countries improved their peace rankings, while 79 experienced a decline.
Top Peaceful Countries:
For the 16th consecutive year, Iceland claims the title of the most peaceful country worldwide. Joining Iceland at the top of the rankings are Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria. Conversely, Afghanistan ranks as the least peaceful country for the eighth year in a row, followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
India’s Peaceful Progress:
India has secured the 126th position in the rankings, moving up two spots from its previous standing. The report highlights a 3.5% improvement in India’s overall peacefulness, attributed to reduced violent crime, enhanced relations with neighbouring countries, and increased political stability. Notably, fewer cross-border incidents and ceasefire violations with Pakistan and China contributed to improved neighbouring countries relations, while reduced geopolitical tensions and social unrest led to better political stability in India.
Other Country Rankings:
Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, the United States of America, and Pakistan hold the rankings of 79, 80, 107, 131, and 146, respectively, in terms of peacefulness.
Global Peace Trend:
Over the past 15 years, the global average country score has declined by five per cent, indicating a decreasing trend in global peace.
