Tennengebirge Mountains formed during the late tertiary period. During the Wurm glaciation period of the Pleistocene.

In 1912, Alexander von Mörk led several expeditions into the cave. Later, followed by other explorers. Then, a cabin has built on the route. The first routes to the mountain opened in 1920. The geological and scientific testings carried out on rock and ice deposits of the cave. Thus, scientists had dated the cave between 50 and 100 million years ago. But, the ice formations are a far newer phenomenon, originating approximately 1000 years ago.
