Discovery of Unusual Antarctic Feather Star Species

This newfound species of Antarctic feather star was encountered during research expeditions carried out in the Southern Ocean between 2008 and 2017. Antarctic Strawberry Feather Star

Throughout their investigation, researchers managed to procure eight feather stars that displayed an extraordinary body shape. Their analysis led to the identification of a previously unknown species – Promachocrinus fragarius, aptly named the Antarctic strawberry feather star. This moniker derives from their distinct “strawberry-like” body, adorned with 20 branching arms. Their hues vary from shades of “purplish” to “dark reddish.”

Intriguing Features and Appearance

Photographs reveal the intriguing aspects of these creatures, showcasing their unique arms with a dichotomy between rough, striped lower appendages and feathery upper arms. The creature’s body shape, akin to a bumpy triangle, is adorned with circular markings likely remnants of broken-off arms.

Recognition as a New Species

Promachocrinus fragarius inhabits the Southern Ocean’s expanses at depths ranging from approximately 215 to 3,840 feet. The identification of this species was based on its distinctive body shape and comprehensive DNA analysis, undertaken by the collaborative research efforts of Emily McLaughlin, Nerida Wilson, and Greg Rouse.
