Ziro Music Festival Kicks Off Amid Boycott Scare
The 10th edition of the Ziro Music Festival (ZMF), a prominent musical extravaganza in Arunachal Pradesh’s Ziro, commenced amid concerns of a potential boycott. The Apatani Students’ Union had issued a boycott threat, accusing the organizers of failing to prominently feature the “Zero Drug Ziro” campaign logo on promotional materials.
Mediation and Resolution
In response to the boycott threat, the Tanii Supuñ Dukun (TSD), a community-based organization, intervened to mediate and resolve the dispute. Both the union and the organizers had been actively engaged in the battle against drug abuse. Consequently, the student union withdrew its call for a bandh scheduled for September 29-30.
Prominent Participation and Environmental Initiatives
Chief Minister Pema Khandu participated in the festival’s inaugural function and engaged in a plogging and cyclothon event as part of the garbage-free India campaign. ZMF, renowned for its celebration of music, art, and culture, has garnered acclaim for its sustainability endeavours. The festival aligns with the environmental ethos of the Apatani community, incorporating locally sourced biodegradable materials into its operations.
An Ongoing Celebration
Initiated in 2012 by musician Bobby Hano and Menwhopause guitarist Anup Kutty, the Ziro Music Festival continues its tradition of fostering musical creativity, cultural exchange, and environmental consciousness. The festival promises to be a vibrant and harmonious celebration of music and nature, upholding the rich cultural tapestry of the Apatani community.
Amidst the backdrop of a potential boycott, the Ziro Music Festival perseveres, serving as a testament to the power of dialogue and community engagement in resolving disputes and preserving cherished cultural events.
