The oldest living aquarium fish – Methuselah

Methuselah, the world’s longest-living tank fish, enjoys eating fresh figs and getting belly massages.

Methuselah was Noah’s grandpa in the Bible, and he lived to be 969 years old. This fish isn’t quite that old. But experts at the California Academy of Sciences say it’s around 90 years old and has no known living counterparts.

Methuselah is a 1.2-metre long, weighs 18 kgs Australian lungfish donated to the San Francisco Museum of Natural History in 1938 from Australia.

The Australian lungfish is now a vulnerable species and cannot be exported from Australian waters. So researchers at the Academy believe they won’t be able to replace Methuselah after he dies.

QUAD Meeting: China accuses US of having a cold war mindset

China thrashed out at the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) foreign ministers conference on February 9, 2022. The meeting is planned to be held in Melbourne on February 10-11. China accused nations, notably India, of building fissures in the region and having a “Cold War mindset.”

The Chinese foreign ministry strongly opposed the Quad, claiming that as a “bloc”. And it attempts to incite conflict, in contrast to China, which stands for peace and prosperity. Further, the ministry accused the US of establishing “blocs” and seeking to impose its “style” of democracy on other countries.

S Jaishankar, India’s foreign affairs minister, will also meet with counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the United States as part of the Quad mechanism. The meeting is likely to define the agenda for the Quad Leaders’ summit in Japan later this year.

Freedom Convoy 2022: Ottawa is under siege; declared a state of emergency

Ottawa, the capital of Canada, declared a state of emergency as a truckers’ protest camp there on February 7, 2022. Local mayor Jim Watson issued a brief statement announcing the emergency on February 6, 2022.

“Declaring a state of emergency recognises the extreme risk and threat to the safety and security of citizens. As they are presenting continuous demonstrations and emphasise the need for cooperation from other jurisdictions and levels of government,” the statement continued.

Ottawa has been under siege since January 28, when truckers under the name of Freedom Convoy 2022 began rolling into the city. They claim the goal of remaining in Ottawa until the government eased restrictions such as a vaccination mandate on truckers travelling between Canada and the United States.

UAE: Gas cylinder explosion in Abu Dhabi

An explosion in a skyscraper in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates on February 9, 2022, was reportedly blamed on a malfunctioning gas cylinder. And the US embassy first suspected a missile strike.

At midnight, Abu Dhabi civil defence got a report of a fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion at a building in a central residential neighbourhood.

It stated that there were no injuries and urged the people to stick to official news sources. And thus they refrained from spreading rumours.
