Scientists from ICRAR discovered an ultra-long magnetar exploded as a supernova

Researchers have discovered what looks to be an immensely massive star acting inexplicably. And fear it may be a form of an unusual astrophysical phenomenon whose existence was previously only hypothesised.

Researchers discovered it using the Murchison Widefield Array telescope in rural Western Australia. It has emitted massive bursts of radiation nearly three times per hour when observed from Earth, according to the researchers.

They believe it is the first known example of an “ultra-long period magnetar.”

It is a type of neutron star. The compact collapsed core of a huge starburst like a supernova. That is strongly magnetised and rotates very slowly. And as opposed to pulsars, which appear to be flashing on and off within milliseconds or seconds from Earth.

NASA: James Webb Space Telescope reached the final orbit

The James Webb Space Telescope ignited its rocket engines for 297 seconds on January 25. It completes the end-of-course adjustment after launch.

This thrust aided in the placement of the world’s most powerful space observatory into its final orbit — L2, or the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point. The telescope will circle the Sun, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.

In fact, the James Webb Space Telescope isn’t the first to orbit L2. Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) launched in 2001 and the Herschel Space Observatory launched in 2009 used this orbit.

Presence of Liquid Water on Mars 2 billion years ago: NASA

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), launched in 2005, has assisted scientists in determining that Mars formerly had surface water.

Previous research had suggested that water on Mars evaporated around 3 billion years ago. But this discovery substantially shortens that timescale.

AGU Advances published the findings last month.

The researchers made the finding by examining chloride salt deposits left behind after frozen water evaporated. The salt deposits also give the first mineral trace of liquid water on Mars.

The researchers used data from the MRO spacecraft’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM).

They also employed the spacecraft’s Context Camera and the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) colour camera to map the spread of chloride salts over Mars’ southern hemisphere.

Meta may be working on two smartwatches: LetsGoDigital

Meta, formerly Facebook, is perhaps working on a new product, which may be smartwatches. LetsGoDigital, through PhoneArena, has published a fresh storey that cites two patents that might hint at what to anticipate from a meta wristwatch.

One design resembles a traditional rectangular-dial wristwatch but has removable screens, while another has a circular dial and three built-in cameras.

The World Intellectual Property Organization issued the patents (WIPO). The initial watch had a rectangular dial with a removable display, comparable to the Apple Watch.

There don’t appear to be any buttons or a crown on the side, implying that this model is entirely touch-controlled.

Redmi Smart Band Pro: Launch in India on February 9

The Redmi Smart Band Pro, a new wristband from Redmi, will be available in India on February 9. The fitness tracker was first introduced in China in October 2021. And it has features such as an AMOLED display, 2.5D tempered glass, and 50-meter water resistance.

The Redmi Smart Band Pro has a 1.47-inch AMOLED touch display with a resolution of 194×368 pixels, according to the China model of the fitness band. A 2.5D curved tempered glass protects the tablet, which also has 450 nits of brightness.

The band can detect more than 110 fitness modes, including 15 expert modes. There is also heart-rate monitoring, a SpO2 sensor for blood oxygen monitoring, and sleep tracking. Other characteristics include breathing guidance and water resistance of 50 metres.
