Comparing Plant-Based and Dairy Yogurts: Nutritional Differences and Fortification Opportunities Revealed: Study

A recent study published in the Frontiers in Nutrition journal revealed that plant-based yoghurts contain significantly lower amounts of total sugar and sodium, along with higher fibre content compared to dairy yoghurts. However, they were found to have lower levels of protein, calcium, and potassium when compared to their dairy counterparts.

The University of Massachusetts conducted the study, which ranked various yoghurts based on their nutrient density using the NRF (Nutrient Rich Food) Index. The yoghurt types included almond, oat, low-fat dairy, nonfat dairy, full-fat dairy, cashew, and coconut. Interestingly, almond yoghurts scored the highest in terms of nutrient density among all the yoghurt varieties.

The study emphasized that this nutritional comparison between plant-based and dairy yoghurts had not been previously applied to commercially available products in the United States. It acknowledged the sustainability aspect of plant-based yoghurts as alternatives to dairy products.

The study aimed to analyze the macronutrient and micronutrient values of plant-based and dairy yoghurts launched between 2016 and 2021. It concluded that dairy yoghurts provide significant dietary nutrients, suggesting that substituting them with plant-based yoghurts may have unintended nutritional consequences.

Oat yoghurts were found to have lower levels of total sugar, sodium, and saturated fat following almond yoghurts. The study proposed that fortification could be an opportunity for the food industry to enhance the nutritional composition of plant-based yoghurts.

Dieticians’ perspective

Dieticians Khushboo Sahijwani Matta and Yogita Chavan shared their perspectives on the topic. Matta highlighted the higher protein content and probiotic benefits of dairy-based yoghurts, which contribute to gut health. Plant-based yoghurts, on the other hand, are suitable for individuals with lactose intolerance. Chavan suggested that almond yoghurt fortified with necessary nutrients could be a nutritionally-dense option, although plant-based yoghurts generally have lower levels of calcium and vitamin B12. Fortification, the addition of micronutrients during food processing, can help address this issue and increase nutrient intake.

In summary, the study emphasized the differences between plant-based and dairy yoghurts in terms of sugar, sodium, fibre, protein, calcium, and potassium content. It highlighted the potential for fortification to improve the nutritional profile of plant-based yoghurts, while also acknowledging the beneficial aspects of dairy-based yoghurts, such as their probiotic properties.

While seeking expert guidance is crucial for understanding the underlying causes and finding relief, Ayurveda offers a range of natural remedies to alleviate these discomforts. Many Ayurvedic herbs, renowned for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, can help reduce these symptoms.

She discussed the numerous health benefits of this plant. Dr Radhamony emphasized that the leaves of the castor oil plant are helpful in various neurological conditions, pain relief, inflammation reduction, and swelling. Respecting the Power of Nature: Witnessing the Eruption of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii

Tourism officials in Hawaii are urging visitors to show respect and mindfulness as they flock to witness the latest eruption of Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, located on the Big Island. Following a three-month pause, Kilauea resumed erupting on Wednesday. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has downgraded the volcano’s alert level from a warning to a watch, as the rate of lava input has declined and there is no threat to infrastructure. The eruption is currently limited to the closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority released a statement emphasizing the cultural and spiritual significance of a volcanic eruption, particularly for Native Hawaiians. They called for visitors to be mindful and respectful when planning a visit to the volcano, suggesting that people refrain from engaging in disruptive activities, such as taking rocks or disturbing plants. For many Native Hawaiians, a volcano eruption holds deep cultural significance, involving chanting, prayers to ancestors, or hula dances. The agency encourages visitors to pause, take in the moment, and appreciate the experience rather than solely focusing on capturing it through photos.

News of the eruption spread rapidly, attracting large crowds to the park. The park’s website warned of major delays and limited parking due to high visitation. Officials estimated that the eruption drew over 10,000 people on the first day and night alone, more than triple the typical number of visitors on non-erupting days. Park authorities recommend visiting during less-crowded times, preferably before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m. Scientists predict that the eruption will continue, remaining confined to the Halemaumau crater within the national park.

It’s safe

Despite the increased activity, officials emphasize that the eruption is occurring in a safe area specifically designed for people to witness such events. Visitors are reminded to approach the experience with reverence and leave as minimal an impact as possible. As the lava continues to put on a spectacular show, locals and tourists alike are captivated by this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon unfolding on Hawaii Island.

Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Jacqueline Roque Fetches €3.4 Million at Auction

Pablo Picasso’s painting “Buste de Femme,” believed to depict his second wife, Jacqueline Roque, has recently been sold for €3.4 million ($3.65 million) at the Van Ham auction house in Cologne. Created in 1971, just two years before Picasso’s death, the painting exceeded expectations, originally estimated to fetch between €1.5 to 2.4 million. Despite its substantial price, it pales in comparison to the record-breaking $179.4 million achieved by Picasso’s “The Women of Algiers” in 2015.

Van Ham conducted an extensive PR campaign leading up to the auction, showcasing the artwork in Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg. This marked the first time in almost 25 years that a significant Picasso piece had been auctioned in Germany. The portrait of Roque, who met Picasso in 1953 and became his second wife, was originally from her estate but was auctioned on behalf of a German private collector.

Roque dedicated herself wholeheartedly to Picasso, standing out among his mistresses and previous wife. After his death in 1973, Roque suffered from severe depression and, ultimately, took her own life 13 years later. As the art world commemorates the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death in 2023, discussions surrounding his treatment of women have gained momentum. In light of the #MeToo movement and increased women’s empowerment, Picasso’s exploitation of power and influence is being re-evaluated. New books and exhibitions explore this aspect of his life, prompting a shift in perspective among art enthusiasts.

Kulfi

Among the top-rated frozen desserts, two popular Indian treats, kulfi and kulfi falooda, have made the list. Kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream, is made by simmering whole milk for an extended period. Kulfi is typically moulded into a distinctive conical shape using special traditional moulds with tight-fitting lids. It is often flavoured with ingredients like pistachio, rose water, saffron, or even fruits like berries. The origins of kulfi can be traced back to the ancient inhabitants of the Himalayas during the Mughal Empire era.

Kulfi Falooda

Kulfi falooda, on the other hand, combines the delightful kulfi with falooda noodles. This refreshing dessert is enhanced with additional elements such as sweet basil seeds, jelly, or rose water. It is commonly garnished with crushed nuts and is a popular treat enjoyed during the summer season. While it is frequently prepared at home, it can also be found on the menus of Indian restaurants and street stalls.

With their unique flavours and textures, kulfi and kulfi falooda have gained recognition globally for their delicious taste and cultural significance. So, if you’re looking to indulge in a delightful frozen dessert, these Indian treats are definitely worth trying.
