Chengdu Science Fiction Museum – The Home of the World’s Largest Science Fiction Event
The Chengdu Science Fiction Museum, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is set to become the new home of the world’s largest science fiction event, Worldcon.
The 59,000 sq. m venue is currently under construction and will host the 81st annual World Science Fiction Convention and the Hugo Awards.
The city of Chengdu, which has a population of over 20 million, is rapidly becoming an important global centre of scientific innovation and research.
The museum, located on Jingrong Lake within the Science & Innovation New City of Chengdu’s Pidu District, is designed to be a vibrant centre of innovation and a gathering place for the leading incubator of science fiction writing in China.
The museum’s fluid design, developed through digital modelling analysis, ensures efficiencies in composition, site conditions, solar irradiation, and structure, meeting the 3 Star standards of China’s Green Building Program.
Moreover, natural hybrid ventilation, photovoltaics embedded within its canopy, and the design and dimensions of its roof contribute to the museum’s sustainable and efficient nature.
The project includes exhibition galleries, theatres, conference halls, and supporting ancillary spaces, creating a path that alternates between indoor and outdoor spaces at multiple levels, linked to the museum’s exhibition galleries, educational facilities, cafes, and other amenities.
The surrounding terrain is planted with native shrubberies, and the landscape design allows for the collection and storage of rainwater for natural filtration and reuse.
Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium – India’s Largest Hockey Stadium
The Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela is a hockey stadium located in the city of Rourkela in Odisha, India.
It is the largest hockey stadium in India in terms of seating capacity, with a capacity of 20,000 people.
The stadium has been certified by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) as the world’s largest hockey stadium in terms of seating capacity.
The stadium will host the Men’s World Cup Hockey tournament, organised by the FIH, along with the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The Birsa Munda Stadium also has a World Cup Village with 225 rooms to house 400 players and officials. Of the total 44 matches of the World Cup, 20 will be played in Rourkela.
Turkish construction company Limak will remodel Camp Nou, Barcelona’s home ground
Barcelona Football Club announced that Turkish construction company Limak will be responsible for remodelling Camp Nou, the club’s home ground.
The work is set to begin in June, following the end of the first team’s season.
FC Barcelona’s first vice president, Elena Fort, stated that Limak was chosen because of its reputation as a world-leading company that could guarantee the best price and shortest completion time.
She also noted that the contract must be financeable, and Limak had guaranteed a maximum price that could not be exceeded and provided sufficient guarantees of solvency and meeting deadlines, including the control of contingencies.
Limak is one of the largest construction companies in Turkey and has completed many international projects, including the Istanbul airport, which was named the best airport in the world.
Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Spain and Europe and the home of Barcelona Football Club, which has won 26 Spanish La Liga titles and five UEFA Champions League titles.
A research study by IIT-M says Chennai could emit 230 MT of CO2 by 2040
A new study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) estimates that Chennai could emit 231.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2040 due to the construction and operation of buildings alone.
The construction industry is believed to account for around 25% of total CO2 emissions, due to the emissions that arise from the production of raw materials such as cement and steel, transportation to construction sites, and the energy used during construction and operation.
The study suggests that switching to renewable sources of energy for operational requirements of buildings could significantly reduce emissions from Chennai.
The study also suggests replacing traditional cement with low-carbon cement, reusing demolition waste for future construction, and switching to renewable resources to meet the energy requirements of operating buildings to help reduce carbon emissions.
₹38,000 crores of infrastructure projects in Mumbai inaugurated by PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹38,800 crores in Mumbai.
One of the key focuses of the Prime Minister is to provide seamless urban mobility and in line with this, he dedicated the Mumbai Metro Rail Lines 2A & 7, worth around ₹12,600 crores, to the nation.
The metro line 2A, which connects Dahisar E and DN Nagar (yellow line), is around 18.6 Km long, while metro line 7, connecting Andheri E – Dahisar E (red line), is around 16.5 Km long.
The foundation stone for these lines was also laid by the Prime Minister in 2015. Additionally, seven sewage treatment plants, with a combined capacity of around 2,460 MLD, will be built at a cost of around ₹17,200 crores in Malad, Bhandup, Versova, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Dharavi, and Worli.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated a novel initiative, 20 Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana, which provides essential medical services like health checkups, medicines, investigations and diagnostics completely free, to the people.
