President of Turkey inaugurates a suspension bridge that connects Asia and Europe
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated a large suspension bridge spanning Turkey‘s Dardanelles Strait. The latest in a succession of big infrastructure projects that he has prioritized during his two decades in office.
The 1915 Canakkale Bridge connects Turkey’s European and Asian coastlines. Turkish and South Korean businesses invested ₹21,335 crores ($2.8 billion) to complete this project. It possesses the world’s longest main span (the distance between the two towers) of any suspension bridge.
Such megaprojects, such as a new Istanbul airport, rail and road tunnels beneath Istanbul’s Bosphorus strait, and a bridge over it, have been essential to Erdogan’s successes since his AK Party first came to power in 2002.
₹62,000 crores worth of road projects are undergoing in India to combat pollution: Nitin Gadkari
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that road infra projects worth ₹62,000 crores had been launched in the national capital to alleviate traffic congestion and combat pollution.
In response to a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Demands for Grants for Road Transport and Highways Ministry, 2022-23. Gadkari recounted how he used to get delayed for an hour in Dhaula Kuan traffic every time he travelled to and from the airport.
Gadkari emphasised the increase in highway connection and road infrastructure. He claims that it now takes only 40 minutes to go from Delhi to Meerut, as opposed to four hours previously.
“Our goal is to minimise building costs while improving quality,” he said. Further, he said that India set a global record of 38 km/day road construction last year.
AAI: Passenger handling capacity of Pune Airport gets doubled; ₹475 crores invested for this project
The Pune airport’s passenger handling capacity gets expanded from 7 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 16 million.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has invested ₹475 crores in a new terminal. AAI has begun construction on the project, which has planned to finish in August 2023.
The new terminal building would connect the old terminal, resulting in a 7,50,000 sqft built-up space capable of processing 16 million passengers per year. And it also includes ten passenger boarding bridges, 72 check-in desks, and 36,000 sqft for food and beverage and retail outlets.
The airport will also include a multilevel car park, which would cost ₹120 crores. Expecting to complete it by July 2022. It will have a parking capacity of 1,024 automobiles, linking to the departure area via a sky bridge.
89 percent of land needed for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train high-speed rail acquired: Railway Minister
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government has acquired 89 per cent of land needed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed train project.
In his written response to a question in the Lok Sabha. The Union Minister stated that the execution of the country’s first Bullet Train, Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail (MAHSR) project has been delayed. Owing to delays in the acquisition of land in the state of Maharashtra, and subsequent delays in contract finalisation. And also due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, he stated.
He also stated that they have acquired roughly 1,248 hectares of the 1,396 hectares of land required for this project.
China plans to spend $30 billion to improve infrastructure in Tibet
China is to spend billions in Tibet, with its new Five-Year Plan allocating around $30 billion to improve infrastructure in the remote Himalayan region. It includes the construction of new expressways and the upgrade of existing ones that have been built out till the Indian borders.
According to the 14th Five-Year Plan, China intends to spend over 190 billion yuan ($29.3 billion) on transportation infrastructure projects between 2021 and 2025.
The funds will be used to build new expressways, upgrade existing highways. And improve rural road conditions, among other things, according to the regional transportation department in Tibet.
