King Charles to make state visits to France and Germany in March
King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla are set to embark on their first state visits to France and Germany since Charles succeeded his mother as the British monarch.
Buckingham Palace announced that during the five-day visit, Charles will address the parliaments of both countries, becoming the first British monarch to do so.
The visit aims to celebrate the UK’s relationship with its European neighbours and showcase how the countries work together.
The trip is being made at the request of the UK government, which is seeking to improve European relations post-Brexit.
The royals will attend various events, including a state banquet at the Palace of Versailles and a ceremony of remembrance at the Arc de Triomphe in France.
In Germany, Charles will address the German parliament and meet refugees who have recently arrived from Ukraine.
Florida Woman Sets Guinness World Record for Consecutive Days Running Ultramarathon Distance
Megan Cassidy, a resident of Kissimmee, Florida, has set a new Guinness World Record for completing the highest number of consecutive days of running an ultramarathon.
She covered a distance of 31.1 miles or approximately 50 kilometres for 23 consecutive days, surpassing the previous record of 22 days.
Cassidy prepared thoroughly for this feat, which she accomplished from December 17, 2022, to January 8, 2023, and ran over 100 marathons, including major ones in Boston, Chicago, Berlin, and London.
She revealed that the most challenging aspect of her attempt was consuming enough calories, and she had to consume a quarter of a pan of lasagna every day.
Once she completes the Tokyo and New York marathons in 2024, she will receive a coveted 6-Star Medal for runners.
Britain’s largest mosque to reopen after costly rebuild following a fire
After a costly rebuild, Britain’s largest mosque, the Baitul Futuh Mosque in the Morden district of south London, is set to fully reopen on March 4.
The mosque, belonging to the Ahmadiyya community, can accommodate up to 13,000 worshippers and has been rebuilt using light-coloured stone imported from Portugal at a cost of £20 million ($24 million), paid for entirely by community members.
Although the mosque’s administrative block was gutted in a huge fire in 2015, the prayer hall survived, and the rebuilt complex will offer improved facilities including for children’s education.
About 1,500 people are expected to attend the re-opening, including British politicians, diplomats and religious leaders.
The Ahmadiyya sect has about 35,000 followers in Britain, out of a total of about four million Muslims.
WHO calls for transparency on COVID-19 origins amidst US-China dispute
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on all countries to share information they have on the origin of Covid-19, in response to the recent US claims of a lab leak in China and Beijing’s denial of the allegations.
The director-general of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized the importance of sharing information with the international scientific community to understand the pandemic’s origins, prevent, and prepare for future epidemics.
He urged China to be transparent in sharing data and conducting investigations, warning that continued politicization of the research of the origin was turning a scientific process into a geopolitical football, making the world less safe.
US President Joe Biden has a cancerous skin lesion successfully removed from his chest
In February, US President Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, underwent successful surgery to remove a cancerous skin lesion from his chest, according to his physician Kevin O’Connor.
The basal cell carcinoma was detected during a routine medical checkup and does not require further treatment.
O’Connor stated that Biden remains healthy and fit to perform his duties as President. The checkup was the final one before Biden’s expected announcement to run for reelection in 2024, making him the oldest person ever to be US President.
Biden has previously been treated for localized non-melanoma skin cancers due to extensive sun exposure during his youth, according to O’Connor.
