Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund named President of the Jury for the 76th Cannes Film Festival
Ruben Ostlund, the two-time Palme d’Or winning Swedish filmmaker, has been selected as the jury president for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s festival is particularly significant, as it is exactly 50 years since fellow Swede, actress Ingrid Bergman, served as jury president in 1973. Ostlund is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, with five of his six features, having had their world premieres there. He won the prestigious Palme d’Or for his art world-set social satire, The Square, in 2017 and his critique of the ultra-wealthy, Triangle of Sadness, in 2022.
In a statement shared on the festival’s website, Ostlund expressed his gratitude and appreciation for being selected to head the jury for the competition at the Cannes Film Festival, noting that it was a privilege to be a part of an event that was so highly anticipated by the film world. He also underscored the importance of cinema culture, particularly in the present era. “The cinema has a unique aspect – there, we watch together, and it demands more on what is shown and increases the intensity of the experience,” he said.
The festival has described Ostlund as an uncompromising and forthright filmmaker who constantly challenges viewers to reflect on themselves and the art form. Ostlund is the third two-time winner of the Palme d’Or to be selected as the President of the Jury, joining the ranks of Francis Ford Coppola and Emir Kusturica. The Official Selection for the Cannes Film Festival will be announced in April.
Warner Bros announces new films in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises
Warner Bros, a movie studio owned by Warner Bros Discovery, has announced that it is developing new movies for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchises, based on J.R.R.
Tolkien’s novels are set in Middle-earth. Middle-earth Enterprises, a unit of Embracer Group AB, will collaborate with Warner Bros in producing the new films.
The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, which started in 2001, received 17 Oscars, while the Hobbit trilogy was released in 2012.
The six movies, directed by Peter Jackson, generated over $6 billion at global box offices. Warner Bros. Pictures Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed that J.R.R. Tolkien’s complex universe remains largely unexplored on film despite the vast scope and details lovingly packed into the two trilogies.
“God of War Ragnarok” Takes Home Best PS5 Game Award, According to Players’ Poll by Sony
Sony’s PS5 console has seen a wave of highly popular games, but a recent poll conducted by Sony has revealed the Best PS5 Game, as voted for by fans.
The poll, named The Players’ Choice: Best of PS5, featured four categories: Best Indie Game, Best Use of the Wireless DualSense Controller, Best Graphical Showcase, and Best PS5 Game overall.
The highly popular game, God of War Ragnarok, took home the award for Best PS5 Game and Best Graphical Showcase, beating out other heavy hitters like Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut.
This news may come as no surprise to fans of God of War Ragnarok, as the game was highly anticipated and critically acclaimed upon release. It had also won several awards prior to this poll, including six awards at The Game Awards in 2022 and the PlayStation Blog’s Game of the Year award. This recent poll only adds to the game’s accolades, showing that both critics and fans agree on its quality.
While the game was delayed from its initial 2021 release, the wait seems to have been worth it for fans of the series, as God of War Ragnarok brings the Norse saga of Kratos and Atreus’ adventure to a satisfying close. The future of the series is uncertain, but with both entries in the rebooted franchise being massively popular, the next God of War game has a lot to live up to.
With the supply issues of PS5 consoles dying down, fans of the console have access to many exciting titles to play, including the highly acclaimed God of War Ragnarok.
