“Cinema Halls are not a gym; Theatre owners can regulate rules regarding outside food,” says the Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court of India has ruled that cinema halls and multiplexes have the right to regulate moviegoers from bringing food and beverage from outside.
The decision came in response to a petition calling for a ban on outside food in cinemas. The judges argued that cinema halls are private property and therefore it is up to the owner to decide what rules to enforce, subject to statutory regulations.
They also stated that cinemas have already been directed to provide clean water and allow a certain amount of food items for infants and children.
The judges acknowledged that people should have the right to choose what cinema they attend, and therefore the management also has the right to make rules.
They also raised the concern that if people were allowed to bring their own food, it could lead to hygiene issues and damage to the cinema’s seats.
Oscar Winner AR Rahman launches a digital music platform “Katraar” on his 56th birthday
AR Rahman, an Oscar-winning music director, singer, and songwriter, celebrated his 56th birthday on January 6, 2023 and announced the launch of his digital music platform called ‘Katraar’.
The platform is intended to be a place where emerging artists can directly upload their creations and earn revenue from them.
Rahman will also be releasing some of his exclusive creations through the Katraar platform. The platform is being developed in partnership with the HBAR foundation and will be deployed on the Hedera Network.
The platform is envisioned to be a place for new technologies and bringing direct revenue to the artists. It aims to focus on innovation and bridge the gap between old and new.
Rahman is known for giving music in a number of films and also for international collaborations. He has won two Oscar awards, and six national film awards and was conferred the Padma Bhushan.
Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Arts Biennale to Display Masterpieces of Islamic Civilization at the Gateway to Makkah and Madinah
The inaugural Islamic Art Biennale is set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from January 23 to April 23.
The event will be held at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport and will feature a juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary works.
The biennale’s theme is “Awwal Bait,” or “the first house” in Arabic, and will be led by a team of renowned curators.
The exhibition will be a multidisciplinary representation of what it means to be Muslim, with many pieces reflecting the central importance of the Kaaba, the most sacred pilgrimage site in Islam.
The event is one of two biennales organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, established in 2020 by the Saudi Ministry of Culture.
International Book Fair opens to the public as part of the Kerala Assembly’s centenary celebrations
The Kerala Assembly campus in Thiruvananthapuram has turned into a venue for an international book fair for a week, beginning January 9.
The event is being held as part of the centenary celebrations of the Assembly Library. The theme of the book fair is ‘Reading is Intoxication’ and it is being held in solidarity with the ongoing anti-drugs campaign in Kerala.
The area is filled with troops of schoolchildren, guided by teachers along the dozens of stalls displaying books. Writer T Padmanabhan was honoured with the first Niyamasabha (Assembly) Library award.
The event was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who said that books are the best way to understand how the times keep changing.
The event will feature more than 100 publishers and many renowned writers and will end on January 15.
Odisha constructs “world’s largest” hockey stadium, BJP responds to Naveen Patnaik
The Odisha government has claimed that the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela is the “world’s largest” hockey facility in terms of seating capacity, as certified by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
The stadium will be hosting the Men’s World Cup Hockey, organised by the FIH, along with Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, between January 13 and 29.
However, a BJP MLA contested the claim and stated that it is the fourth largest stadium in the world, following the National Hockey Stadium in Pakistan’s Lahore with a capacity of 45,000 people, Chandigarh Hockey Stadium (30,000) and Weingart Stadium (multipurpose) in Los Angeles in the US (22,355).
The Odisha Sports Secretary clarified that the Bisra Munda Hockey Stadium is the largest as 20,000 people can formally seat and witness a match which is not available anywhere in India.
