Hot on the heels of this lunar achievement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled its next ambitious endeavour – the Aditya-L1 mission, marking India’s debut dedicated mission for solar study. A Giant Leap Towards the Sun

The Aditya-L1 mission is set to revolutionize our understanding of the Sun by venturing to the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point, situated approximately 1.5 million kilometres away. ISRO embarked on this historic journey on September 2, catapulting a 44.4-meter tall Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from the Eastern coast, near Chennai, at precisely 11:50 a.m. The mission aims to place Aditya-L1 in a Halo orbit around Lagrangian point L1, the closest point to the Sun, after a 125-day voyage spanning 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.

Aditya-L1 is poised to be the world’s first space-based observatory exclusively dedicated to the Sun. This trailblazing mission promises to capture images of the Sun to support various scientific experiments. Crucially, it will furnish invaluable data to unravel the mysteries of the solar corona and bolster our capacity to forecast space weather accurately.

Exploring Lagrange Points: A Strategic Advantage

Scientists have identified five Lagrangian points, strategically positioned between the Earth and the Sun, where objects can maintain stable positions with minimal fuel consumption. Aditya-L1 will utilize the unique properties of Lagrange point L1 to optimize its solar observations.
